I am really, really happy with this piece of artwork. This was my first time painting the ocean in Photoshop and I had a blast!
This was my process – I drew the line art first, using a reference photo for the shading. I didn’t try to copy the original model’s face – I was watching The Women while sketching, so it seemed to me that the mermaid started to take on a bit of Norma Shearer. (My friend Tucker thinks she looks like Geena Davis).
I scanned the line art, then began painting in layers. As you can see, I went wild when it came to the seafoam!
My friend Feather Storm (of Crescent Moon Collective) got to see a preview, and she pointed out something anatomical that had to be corrected. I won’t tell you what! 😉
